My Journey to Veganism
My personal story is not all that interesting. Like many current vegans, I grew up both an animal-lover and a meat-lover. As a kid I loved a good steak, lobster, hot dog, or balogna and mayonnaise sandwich. The only thing I would eat at a restaurant was chicken fingers with honey, and in high school I lived on McDonald's chicken sandwiches and macaroni and cheese. My transition to veganism began when I was in college and really took off when I was in graduate school. My transition was slow and gradual and involved many hours of research to educate myself, mostly on animal rights and nutrition, although it began with learning the statistic that it requires 10 lbs of grain to produce 1 lb of meat. Over the course of the 8 years that followed my exposure to that statistic, I gradually gravitated toward my interest in health, longevity, ethics, and ultimately veganism. April, 2012 will mark one year as a committed vegan for me. Before that I was vegetarian for 9 months and pescatarian for 2 years. It has been an incredible journey and I am so blessed to have had the experiences that I have had over the last 8 years that have brought me to this point. I decided to create this website because I have learned so much through my research, but if I want to share my resources with others I'd have to give them a list of 50+ websites to check out. Instead of creating such a list and carrying it around on little sheets of paper with me, I can just tell people to go to learnveg.com to learn everything they need to know about vegetarian and vegan issues. And you can, too!
I'd love to hear your journey and post it here to inspire others. Please e-mail me at [email protected] to share. Thank you!
